    What Is the Nemechek Protocol?
    Nemechek Consultative Medicine

A new way of understanding — and reversing a wide range of physical and neurological conditions

The Nemechek Protocol is a physician-developed approach that targets the root cause: a dysregulated autonomic nervous system.

For decades, autism and many chronic conditions have been treated as fixed diagnoses — managed, not reversed. Dr. Patrick Nemechek disagreed.

After years of research and clinical practice, he identified a common thread running through autism spectrum disorder, PANS/PANDAS, traumatic brain injury, dysautonomia, and a range of chronic inflammatory conditions: a disrupted autonomic nervous system.

"The brain isn't broken. It's being suppressed — and we can change that." — Dr. Patrick Nemechek, D.O.

The Nemechek Protocol is a structured, evidence-informed approach to restoring autonomic balance — and with it, neurological function. Thousands of families have seen meaningful, measurable improvement in their children.

    The science

Why the autonomic nervous system is the key

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) controls virtually every involuntary function in the body — digestion, immune regulation, inflammation, and crucially, brain development and repair. When it falls out of balance, the downstream effects are wide-ranging.

In autism, Dr. Nemechek observed that bacterial overgrowth in the gut produces propionate — a compound that suppresses the brain's ability to prune and repair neural pathways. Simultaneously, chronic low-grade neuroinflammation disrupts the normal autonomic signals that govern learning, language, and behavior.

The protocol addresses both simultaneously: rebalancing the gut microbiome to reduce propionate production, and using omega-3 fatty acids to drive resolution of neuroinflammation — allowing the brain's own repair mechanisms to engage.

    The protocol

    Three elements, working together

    1

    Gut rebalancing

A targeted, one-time course of rifaximin to address bacterial overgrowth and reduce propionate production — removing the primary suppressive signal on the brain.

    2

    Omega-3 supplementation

High-quality fish oil provides the DHA and EPA essential for resolving chronic neuroinflammation and enabling the brain's innate repair processes to function normally.

    3

    Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)

High-phenol EVOO delivers powerful anti-inflammatory compounds — oleocanthal, oleacein, and oleic acid — that further reduce neuroinflammation and support the resolution pathways omega-3s initiate, accelerating the brain's recovery.
